Today is Blog for the MOTHERS Act Day

BlogHers Act: Blog Day for the Mothers ActBlogHer has asked bloggers to post today about the MOTHERS Act. It's an important issue, and you can find out more about it on BlogHer.com and Postpartum Progress.

Normally, I'm all over this kind of thing. Today I can't think of a single thing to say, because Liam — not a great sleeper, anyway — has a cold and can't breathe comfortably, so he has been up all night the past several nights. It's ironic (wait, is it really ironic? Damn Alanis Morissette), because I completely understand how raging postpartum hormones can combine with sleep deprivation and jangly nerves from a constantly screaming kid or two to drive a mother out of her freaking mind. Has anyone read that Kurt Vonnegut story, "Harrison Bergeron"? I swear, sometimes having kids is like the handicaps he describes; it almost impossible to finish a thought.

So when I read about a woman who has gone off the deep end and done something tragic, part of me gets it and tries not to judge her. Instead, I'll call my senators to urge them to co-sponsor the MOTHERS Act bill, which will provide funding for research, education, screening and treatment of postpartum depression.

I get the post-partum thing...totally. I never felt like I'd harm my daughter, but I recognized fully that my hormones were out of whack. I cried incessantly and any act of kindness sent me into hysterics. I finally said to someone, "AM I HAVING A PROBLEM?"

I support this fully - would love to see money go toward helping those who suffer much more than I did.

Thank you so much for posting today and supporting Blog Day for the MOTHERS Act. Let's hope people keep writing and calling into tomorrow, because I hear the phone lines were pretty busy today. Women have so much power and we sometimes forget to use it. You have helped so many women with PPD, and I am forever grateful!

Gah, I remember my mom questioning if I needed my happy pills back after a particularly poor quality sleep stretch (to put it nicely) - I snapped at her that I needed some effing sleep before I could even BEGIN to know if I needed pills.

GAH! We all need a helping hand....

Thanks for posting on such an important and misunderstood topic.

And now for something completely different,

Tag, Cutie! You're it!

It's true, we all need a helping hand. And with PPD, part of what's so sad about the stories of tragedy is that they don't have to end that way.

NaBloPoMo fodder! Thanks, Poppet!

Thanks for your support of the MOTHERS Act. Too often postpartum depression is a problem that goes unnoticed, and most women with PPD never receive any type of treatment. PPD is a treatable illness, and it is essential that we continue to educate ourselves and others about this important issue.

Thanks for making me aware of Mothers Act. Being a person who deals with Mothers Day Presents I think it's only right that we let people know abot PPD as everyone needs a mother who enjoys things.
